Did you know? There is a right and a wrong time for tree trimming in Denver. The Arbor Day Foundation, which is a nonprofit dedicated to tree conservation efforts, has laid out specific recommendations for how to trim trees throughout the different seasons. Here’s what you need to know:

Fall

The Arbor Day Foundation recommends avoiding tree trimming in the fall season unless it is absolutely necessary. Trees tend to heal much slower during the fall season, so if you choose this time of year to do your trimming, your trees may take a long time to recover. If you notice dead branches that may fall and cause property damage or injuries, you shouldn’t wait until winter. But, if you want to trim back your trees just for aesthetic reasons, it may be best to wait just a little longer.

Winter

If you want your trees to begin growing rapidly in the spring, it’s recommended that you do your trimming in winter. This is especially important if you want your trees to grow beautiful, blooming flowers once spring rolls around. Although you may be alarmed when you notice sap flowing out of your trees after you trim them, this is completely normal and not harmful.

Spring

Many people wait until it’s spring to trim their trees because they think this will help flowers bloom, but that’s not necessarily true. If you want your trees to bloom, it’s best to trim them right after last year’s flowers begin to die off. Also, you have to remember that not every tree will begin to grow flowers in spring. Some flowers will not bloom until summer, so it’s ok to trim these back in the springtime.

Summer

Summer should be considered your maintenance season for tree trimming. The weather is warmer, so you can easily schedule tree trimming as you see fit. During this season, pay close attention to your trees’ growth to determine if you need to trim or remove any dead branches or limbs that are being weighed down by leaves. You can also use the summer to control how you want your tree to grow for the rest of the year. For example, you can remove limbs that are beginning to grow too close to your home or hang over the area where you park your car to prevent property damage. It’s always wise to call a professional tree service company to help you decide if your trees need to be trimmed, but many homeowners try to tackle this project on their own.
